If you’re looking to create more privacy, reduce noise, or simply enhance your outdoor space, screening plants are one of the best solutions for Melbourne gardens. Whether you have a small courtyard or a large backyard, the right hedge or screening plant can provide year-round greenery while adding value and beauty to your home.
Melbourne’s climate is ideal for a wide range of screening plants, with many varieties thriving in both full sun and part shade. Popular choices include Lilly Pilly, Viburnum, Pittosporum, Photinia, and selected native species, all offering dense foliage and excellent privacy.
For homeowners wanting a fast-growing option, Lilly Pilly remains one of the most popular screening plants in Melbourne. It responds well to pruning, creates a lush green hedge, and is available in several varieties to suit different garden sizes. Viburnum is another favourite, valued for its rapid growth and attractive foliage, while Pittosporum is perfect for modern landscapes thanks to its tidy appearance and low maintenance requirements.
To achieve the best results, plant your screening hedge in well-prepared soil, apply quality mulch to retain moisture, and water regularly during the establishment period. An annual application of slow-release fertiliser will also encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage.
